PROCESS TECHNOLOGY

Sewage/Effluent contains soluble and insoluble form of inorganic and organic compounds. Soluble inorganic compounds are mostly salts of light metal in lower concentration and does not require any treatment. Inorganic insoluble are dirt and dust which are having  higher specific gravity and get settle down. Bigger sizes get settled in grit chamber and finer size particle get settled/separated with Aerobic Sludge.

Organic compounds are mainly Carbohydrates, Proteins and Fats which are measured as BOD in terms of Pollution. It is subjected to treatment via biological conversion and it is treated in the activated sludge process. This treatment is also known as Aerobic suspended Growth System. Sewage/Effluent containing waste organic matter is aerated in an aeration basin in which micro-organism metabolize the soluble and suspended organic matter. SBR technology is one of the most advance system of Activated Sludge process.

The Cyclic Activated Sludge Process is operated in a batch reactor mode, which eliminates all the inefficiencies of the continuous processes; A batch reactor is a perfect reactor, which ensures 100% treatment. The complete process takes place in a single reactor, within which all biological treatment steps take place sequentially.

The complete biological operation Is divided Into cycles. Each cycle is of 3 - 5 hrs duration during which all treatment steps take place.

A. Explanation of Cyclic Operation
A basic cycle comprises:
•    Fill-Aeration       (F/A)
•    Settlement          (S)
•    Decanting           (D)
These phases in a sequence constitute a cycle, which is then repeated hence the process is called Sequential Batch Reactor/ Cyclic Activated Sludge Process.

B. Description of Cycle
During the period of a cycle, the liquid is filled in the Cyclic Activated Sludge Technology Basin up to a set operating water level. Aeration Blowers are started for aeration of the effluent. After the aeration cycle, the biomass settles under perfect settling conditions. Once Settled the supernatant is removed from the top using a DECANTER. Solids are wasted from the tanks during the decanting phase.

These phases in a sequence constitute a cycle, which is then repeated.

Aerobic and facultative bacteria are the predominant micro organisms which carry out the above reaction of organic matter i.e. oxidation and synthesis (generation of CO2 and Sludge mass).

MBBR Filter Media

MBBR  technology  is one of the most advance system of Activated Sludge process.

The concept behind the moving bed bioreactor is to provide continuously operating bio film reactor, which is non-cloggable, does not require backwashing and has no pressure drop. This is achieved by making the bio film grow on smaller carrier elements made of PP and have lower SG than water. Upward moving air bubbles colloid with carrier elements and keep  it into constant rotary movement.  Collision of air bubbles also causes in split into number of bubbles and finally results into more mass transfer area and more contact time.

The system uses specially designed Bio media, which provides a large surface area per unit weight for biological growth.

The bio media is made of plastic material, which has a very high long life. The media is shaped like cylinders with internal fins  so as to provide a large surface area in the given volume. The media provides up to 500-m2 effective area for growth of the bio film per m3 of volume.

TREATMENT PROCESS

Sewage is generated at different sources in varied quantity and quality get mixed and forms a common composite bulk of liquid. The pollutants are mainly biodegradable organic compounds in the form of soluble and insoluble inorganic compound like dirt and mud., Inorganic compounds get filtered by its own and does not require any treatment. However organic compounds are treated in aerobic process. Treatment process starts from screening to remove any floating course particle. Further  Sewage passes through Grit/ Silt separation chamber. Grit/Silt get separated by gravity in the bottom.  Sewage further get Equalized in Equalization Tank and pumped to Aeration Tank.

MBR-Bio Reactor

Further Sewage shall be treated in aeration system  by providing suitable size/capacity of diffuse aeration. Suitably selected, optimum type of  bio-mass will be added into aerobic tank to start sludge mass growth. BOD/COD get digested in this process and forms sludge mass. A part of BOD also get converted into carbon dioxide. And mixing of bulk is also provided by selecting suitable type of diffusers. However, diffuser performs duel function (i.e. transfer of atmospheric oxygen and mixing of aerated mass). Continuous growth of sludge mass concentration up to  6000 to 8000 ppm is required and excess sludge is subjected to rejection. Hence this mixture of solid and liquid further passes to MBR tank. Most of the biomass gets seperated through filtration. A high microorganism population is maintained within the Aeration chamber by recycling part of the separated sludge from Membrane Bioreactor Tank (MBR Tank).

Clear water comes out of membrane as pereate is further chlorinated. It will be suitable for final disposal and recycling for horticulture, cooling tower, flushing and misc uses. Excess Sludge from MBR is subjected to be dried in sludge drawing beds. The dried cake from the sludge drawing beds shall be used as manure.
